Flood prevention strategy and update on flood prevention projects across Malaysia, including evaluating the extent of flood risk, vulnerability and assessing the capacity to response
Malaysia suffered severe flooding from December 2014 to January 2015 which claimed 21 lives and displaced around 200,000 people. Most recently, torrential rain fell from 3 November 2017, resulting in flooding in Penang, which is seen as Malaysia's worst since prolonged storms hit northern and eastern states from December 2014 to January 2015. Therefore, there is a need for an effective flood protection, as well as to learn from the experiences and best practices for greater collaboration and information sharing to enhance the synergy and extend the resource base for more effective implementation of flood preparedness initiatives across Malaysia. Currently, Malaysia has begun to map out flood mitigation projects to prevent a recurring disaster. Work on some emergency plan for flood prevention projects have already begun. Against this development, this Conference is designed to provide a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences as well as discuss thoroughly on key issues and current understanding on flood prevention, protection and mitigation, their consequences for vulnerability and what actions should be taken now to reduce risks of flood disasters, including integrating recovery, rehabilitation plans as well as preparedness and response plans for efficient flood risk reduction across Malaysia.
